NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Fifteen brown pelicans rescued from the Gulf
oil spill have been released back into their Louisiana coastal
habitat.
The state Department of Wildlife and Fisheries said Thursday's
release of pelicans is the first in Louisiana since the spill
started in April.
Hundreds of pelicans rescued and cleaned in Louisiana have been
released in other states - mostly eastern Florida and Texas.
The department said biologists decided to release the birds on
Rabbit Island, in Calcasieu Lake, because the southwest Louisiana
area is inland and hasn't been affected by the oil spill.
