KENNER, La. (AP) - A 10-year-old has been arrested for allegedly shooting a 7-year-old as they played video games.
Kenner Police Chief Steve Caraway said the older child was arrested Thursday on charges of negligent injury and illegal possession of a handgun and later released into his parents' custody.
The shooting happened Tuesday evening. Caraway said as the children played, the 10-year-old pulled the gun and the weapon discharged. A bullet struck the younger child in the thigh. Caraway said the younger child was treated at an area hospital and released.
The 10-year-old fled the house and discarded the weapon, which police have not yet recovered, Caraway said. Under questioning by police, Caraway said the child was not cooperative, denied involvement and would not say how he got the weapon. However, he tested positive for gunshot residue, investigators said.
Caraway said it's not the first time the 10-year-old has been in police custody. He said the boy was arrested for shooting three others with a pellet gun in April.
