10 Proposed Constitutional Changes

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Voters may be scratching their heads when they cast their ballots in the Nov. 2 election. They'll be wading through 10 proposed constitutional changes that delve into complex rules governing taxes, property rights and criminal trial
procedure.

The easiest amendment to understand is at the top of the list. It was prompted by public outcry when lawmakers tried to give themselves a hefty pay increase that was eventually scrapped by Gov. Bobby Jindal.

The proposal would require any approved salary increases for statewide elected officials, legislators and members of the Public Service Commission to take effect at the beginning of a new term in office.

The rest of the amendments take a bit of research.

The nonpartisan Public Affairs Research Council puts out a guide for voters, available at www.la-par.org.
