BILOXI, Miss. (AP) - The names of 170 victims of Hurricane
Katrina in south Mississippi were sandblasted on a memorial in
preparation for ceremonies Sunday marking the storm's five-year
anniversary. It would have been 169 if not for a chance encounter.
Dennis Cowart, who designed the memorial, was tasked with
compiling a list of the dead and missing. He thought the tally was
complete until a former client, Phil McCuien, stopped by his Ocean
Springs office in July and mentioned his wife has been missing
since the 2005 hurricane.
So Jeannette McCuien's name will appear on the memorial.
A complete list of victims may be impossible to compile,
officials say, in part because some people may never have been
reported missing, and their bodies may have washed out to sea.
