NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Sen. Mary Landrieu says she's been informed
by President Barack Obama's administration that New Orleans schools
are about to get $1.8 billion in federal money to cover damages
from Hurricane Katrina.
Landrieu said in a news release Wednesday that the announcement
will be made by the Federal Emergency Management Agency this week.
The money will go to the Orleans Parish School Board and the
state's Recovery School District, which is overseeing or running
many New Orleans schools.
The school board and recovery district asked for the lump sum
payment, use of which will be guided by a master plan adopted in
2008. There were 127 campuses in New Orleans before Katrina hit in
August 2009. Those are being consolidated into 87.
