Pilot identified in helicopter crash

Jason McKean, 40, of Amite, was the pilot on board the helicopter that crashed in St. Mary Parish. He worked for Chet Morrison Contractors in Houma. The passenger, Lanny Ledet, was identified yesterday.

Update: One Victim Identified in Helicopter Crash

A small helicopter owned by a Houma towboat company crashed Thursday in coastal Louisiana, killing both people on board. Cenac Marine Services attorney Berwick Duval identified the passenger as Lanny Ledet, manager of the company's Golden Ranch Plantation in Gheens. He says the pilot was not a Cenac employee. Authorities have not released the pilot's name. Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Lynn Lunsford said the Robinson R-44 helicopter crashed around 7:30 a.m. about 13 miles southwest of Morgan City. FAA and National Transportation Safety Board investigators will go to the wreck site as soon as possible, Lunsford said.

Helicopter owned by Cenac Marine Services from Houma

According to the FAA, the registered owner of the helicopter is Cenac Marine Services LLC, a towboat company based out of Houma, LA. It is a Rotocraft, Model R44ii made by Robinson Helicopter Company. A woman who answered the phone at the company says one of their helicopters had crashed but the company was still gathering information. It crashed around 7:30 am in a marshy area about 13 miles southwest of Morgan City. The Federal Aviation Administration also confirms the only two people who were on board are dead in St. Mary Parish. Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries has four boats and six agents assisting in search, rescue and recovery, LDWF Public Information Officer Adam Einck said.

The St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Office called LDWF around 9:30 this morning. The helicopter went down in the Belle Isle area east of Wax Lake, which is about 10-15 miles south of Calumet.

Update: Helicopter Crash in St. Mary

WAFB: Two people are reported dead after a helicopter crashed south of Morgan City Thursday morning. The helicopter crashed into Wax Lake.
Several fishermen and hunters called 911 after spotting the helicopter on fire in the water. It is not yet known who owns the helicopter or who was on board.

Right Now: Helicopter Crash In St. Mary Parish

First responders en route to a helicopter crash in St. Mary Parish. It happened in Belle Isle, east of Burns Point/ Wax Lake Outlook. The Sheriff tells us they are en route, with the Coast Guard and Wildlife and Fisheries. No word on extent of injuries. KATC's Jenise Fernandez is on her way and will have more as soon as possible.
