The Franklin Police Department responded to 18 complaints over the past 24 hours and made the following arrest:
5/15/13 @ 12:44 AM, RODNEY JAMES MANUEL, 45, of Clark St., Franklin, La. was arrested and charged with Operating A Motor Vehicle While Intoxicated, No License Plate Light, and Drivers License Not on Person. Mr. Manuel was processed and held with no bond at time of press release

The tourism center building that sank last year is expected to be restored today to its original height. Officials at the St. Mary Parish Tourism Office say repairs at the Cajun Coast Visitors Center are expected to be completed by July. The building sank 4.5 feet on June 14, 2012--30 days from its projected completion date. Officials say once these repairs are complete, crews will begin paving the parking lot at the new facility.

A Morgan City teen is in jail after officials say his three-month-old son showed symptoms of shaken baby syndrome. The St. Mary Parish Council is considering banning smoking on parish courthouse property. An ordinance introduced by Councilman Steve Bierhorst would prohibit smoking within the courthouse square and on some adjacent properties, including the parking garage. The ordinance would also ban smoking in parish buildings without a designated smoking area consisting of a room with a separate air ventilation system from the main system. The council vote on the ordinance on June 12.

A school cafeteria in the City of Franklin is closed following the discovery of a carbon monoxide leak. The Franklin Fire Department received a call from St. John Elementary School Wednesday after several cafeteria workers complained they weren't feeling well. Fire Chief Chuck Bourgeois says children were evacuated from a nearby classroom as a precaution. Gas company crews are at the school today to find the source of the leak.
